This is the first set of a self-initiated typography project I have called “the years”. Typography is a real passion of mine and I thought it would be quite innovative to do some hard to read almost logo style years designs. My next set will more than likely follow the same trend but rather than logo style I will do some more treatment on the lettering and create some poster designs.
This month in Computer Arts Magazine (no. 167) you will see a picture of me and some advice by me in the typography advice section (as shown below). This is my first piece in Computer Arts Magazine and it was great to be asked to be involved especially as I only really got into graphic design in Dec 2008. It’s a great feature with some great advice from some really awesome typography designers.
These designs are born from experimenting with gradients and circles, hence the name – Gradius (gradient and radius). These poster designs have a very sci-fi feel to them and so they have fitted use as poster for science and astronomy lectures. I love the fact with these that they are all very unique although they all follow a similar trend. There is a wallpaper download at the end of this post.
Here are some retro style posters which I have created for the International Year of Astronomy which is this year (2009). Rather than go for a modern sci-fi highly photoshopped image I have gone for a more retro feel with posters that you might of expect to see on an old astronomy book back in the 60s and 70s.
I initially designed these as self-promotional works but word gets around and last week I received an email from the IYA 09 that they thought the posters were great and would like to use them for their promotional work – this was awesome and I of course said yes.
