Apple’s new iPad 3, with it’s retina display, is so good it’s just crying out for some decent HD wallpaper. So I decided to create some this weekend as part of my geometric CUBEN 12 series and have shared them as downloads below (along with some photos of the wallpapers on my new iPad). These files are at the correct resolution for portrait or landscape viewing – that being 2048px x 2048px @ 264ppi. Enjoy but please use them strictly for personal use only for mobile device wallpaper and don’t alter them – for commercial purposes please contact me.
These pieces actually didn’t take long to create as they are just repetitions of this shape equally spaced with a double sized version over the top. I then picked out some nice colours, ran a random colour and transparency script, added some noise and hey presto.
Each Retina / HD Wallpaper has been created from an initial 24″ print – more details of the prints can be seen on my portfolio site excites.co.uk. Also check out my earlier post of iPad 1 and 2 wallpaper and you can view the higher quality photos in the slideshow over at my flickr account.

When you view the images in Safari on an iPad it seems to show the file at 1024×1024 / compressed (possible bugs or limitation with Safari) but once you save or copy the file it will save the full resolution file.
If you are having problems getting the full resolution files (which maybe due a number of things like using an app like Dropbox or if you have an app which optimises files to use the least bandwidth) then the best route is to download the zip file you want to your PC / Mac with iTunes on it. Then extract the image to your Photo sync folder and sync with your iPad.

Jason I don’t know what you are doing to get them to 1024 x 1024? I can’t replicate this from either downloading from my Mac and transferring with iTunes or from Safari on my iPad. Are you using dropbox of something similar to transfer them? Or have you got an app which background optimises images?
Full proof way is to download the zip and extract it on your computer that runs iTunes and then transfer it with the photo sync option.

How on earth did you make these? That’s not rhetorical, I am simply in awe as to how you would construct these. I’ve been trying to replicate it in Illustrator, and if I continue with my current method, it would take me the better part of a day to do one of them.
